If your child or relative has high-dependency medical needs, the HSE may approve a complex care package for support at home. A complex care package may be right for children or adults who need daily clinical support — not just help with everyday tasks. This includes ventilation, tracheostomy, PEG feeding, seizure management, and specialist nursing for progressive conditions or high-dependency needs.

How the Process Works.
The HSE reviews each case carefully, considering medical needs, level of dependency, risks, and family circumstances. Referrals can be made by hospital teams, public health nurses, or families themselves. Once approved, Obsidian is ready to deliver care quickly and seamlessly.

Does My Child or Relative Qualify.
A complex care package may be right if your loved one requires daily clinical interventions such as ventilation, tracheostomy, or PEG feeding. It may also apply for seizure management, emergency medication protocols, or specialist nursing for conditions like Motor Neurone Disease, advanced MS, Huntington’s, or spinal injury. Packages are also designed for those needing extra medical oversight due to severe intellectual or physical disabilities, or for round-the-clock support when standard home hours are not enough to keep someone safe.

How the HSE Decides.
The HSE reviews each package with the whole person in mind. They consider medical needs, the daily clinical interventions required, and the level of dependency to decide if specialist nursing is necessary. They assess risks, including what could happen if care is not in place, and take family circumstances into account to ensure support is sustainable.

Who Can Start the Process.
Referrals can begin in many ways. Hospital consultants, discharge planners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Public Health Nurses, and Children’s Disability Network Teams can initiate the process. Families can also request a referral directly, and once approval is granted, choose Obsidian to provide the care.

What You Can Do Now.
