Expert training for exceptional care
At Obsidian Homecare Services, we are committed to ensuring our carers and nurses are equipped with the most comprehensive training to provide high-quality care in both homecare and care home settings. We understand the importance of a skilled and knowledgeable team, whether it’s supporting clients in the comfort of their own home or providing specialized care in a residential setting.
Our team includes Registered General Nurses, intellectual disability nurses, paediatric nurses, and dedicated carers who undergo specialised training designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals receiving care in both private homes and residential care facilities.
Carer induction & core training
Every new carer undergoes an induction program that prepares them for the vital role they will play in supporting clients. This initial training is comprehensive and covers:
Personal care techniques
Carers learn the fundamentals of supporting clients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, eating, and grooming.
Health & safety protocols
Our carers are trained to maintain a safe environment for both clients and staff, which includes understanding infection control measures, safe manual handling, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the care environment.
First aid & emergency procedures
We provide basic first aid training so that carers can respond effectively in emergencies, from minor injuries to medical crises.
Manual handling & safe practices
Carers are trained in lifting techniques, assisting with mobility aids, and managing transfer tasks safely to prevent injury to both clients and themselves.
Specialised training for complex care needs
Carers who work with individuals with specialised medical needs undergo further, in-depth training:
Dementia care
This includes strategies for supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, focusing on effective communication, managing challenging behaviors, and promoting independence.
Mental health support
Training on supporting clients with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia. This includes de-escalation techniques, medication management, and communication strategies.
Palliative & end-of-life care
Carers are trained to provide compassionate care for individuals nearing the end of life, including pain management, emotional support for families, and making the transition as peaceful as possible.
Stroke recovery care
Carers learn techniques to support clients recovering from strokes, including mobility assistance, speech therapy exercises, and emotional support.
Advanced training for nurses
Our nurses receive highly specialised training to ensure they can provide the most effective clinical care, particularly in care home settings or for clients with complex medical needs. This training is tailored to each nurse’s specialisation:
Registered general nurses
Our RGNs undergo advanced training in clinical nursing, including wound care, administration of intravenous medications, catheter care, and management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory diseases. They also receive training in recognising and managing medical emergencies and providing clinical assessments for clients in both homecare and care home settings.
Intellectual disability nurses
This specialised training focuses on understanding the unique needs of clients with intellectual disabilities. Nurses are trained in communication techniques, managing behavioural challenges, administering medication, and promoting independence in everyday tasks.
Paediatric nurses
For those working with children, our paediatric nurses receive extensive training in child development, paediatric care principles, managing chronic childhood illnesses, and delivering care in a compassionate and family-centred manner. They are also trained in paediatric life support and managing medical devices for children with special needs.
Continuing education & professional development
At Obsidian Homecare Services we believe that continuous learning is critical for maintaining high standards of care, especially when the healthcare environment is constantly evolving. To ensure our carers and nurses stay up to date with the latest care practices, we offer a range of continuing education opportunities:
-
Monthly workshops & in-service training
Regular workshops focus on emerging healthcare trends, new technology, advanced care techniques, and regulatory updates that affect care homes and homecare services in Ireland.
-
External certifications & qualifications
We encourage carers and nurses to pursue formal qualifications and certifications that further enhance their expertise. This might include qualifications in dementia care, paediatric nursing, or clinical care management. These certifications ensure that our staff are well-prepared to care for clients with specialised needs in both home and care home environments.
-
Leadership & management development
For senior carers and nurses, we offer leadership training to develop skills in managing teams, coordinating care delivery, and implementing best practices in care homes or homecare settings. This helps ensure that leadership across our services is strong and aligned with quality standards.
Comprehensive training for carers & nurses in homecare & care settings
Whether our staff are working in care homes or providing support in the comfort of clients’ homes, they receive the same level of specialised training to ensure they are fully prepared for the challenges they may face. This includes:
Personalised care plans
Carers and nurses are trained to assess the individual needs of each client, whether in a homecare or care home setting. They develop personalised care plans that address all aspects of the client's physical, emotional, and social needs, and these plans are regularly updated to ensure they remain relevant.
Managing medical equipment
Whether it’s in a care home or private residence, our team is trained in using essential medical equipment such as oxygen tanks, mobility aids, feeding tubes, and more. This ensures clients who need medical support at home receive the same high level of care as those in care homes.
Behavioural & emotional support
For clients with dementia, mental health conditions, or behavioral challenges, carers and nurses are equipped with training in managing complex behavioral issues. This includes understanding how to provide compassionate care, de-escalate challenging situations, and maintain a peaceful environment in both homecare and care home environments.
Regulatory compliance
Regardless of the setting, our staff are fully trained to meet the regulations set by HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) and other relevant standards. We ensure that all care, whether delivered at home or in a care home, meets Ireland’s strict healthcare guidelines for quality, safety, and professionalism.
Emergency protocols & crisis management
In both settings, our carers and nurses are well-trained to respond to emergencies, including administering CPR, handling falls, medical crises, or evacuations. Staff know how to respond promptly and appropriately to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the client.
Ongoing support & supervision for carers & nurses
To ensure that both our carers and nurses are supported in their roles, we provide continuous supervision and support:
-
Clinical supervision for nurses
Regular clinical supervision ensures that nurses have the opportunity to reflect on their practice, seek advice, and engage in peer support. This is particularly important in complex clinical situations or when making difficult decisions in care.
-
Mentoring & support for carers
Carers are paired with experienced mentors who provide guidance and support in developing their skills. This helps build confidence and encourages the application of best practices in every care situation.
Commitment to quality & excellence
Through our dedicated training and ongoing development initiatives, we aim to provide our carers and nurses with the highest standards of care and equip them to handle any challenge, whether it’s in the homecare setting or a residential care home. At Obsidian Homecare Services, we are committed to offering the best possible care to our clients and ensuring our team is always prepared to deliver the highest level of professional care, compassion, and expertise.
